Career & Calling Articles

Work, Worship, & Talents

I think we can all agree, there are lots of things to distract and pull our attention these days. Texts, emails, TEAMS chats, unexpected work meetings, and all of those pesky app notifications can make a quiet day turn noisy really quick! If not managed, those little distractions will suck up your time and energy, and pull you from the important work of the day.

Be an Expert

We will all likely have an imposter moment from time to time. Rather than chasing that moment away or feeling guilty for having it, simply remind yourself of who God created you to be; sometimes we all need that reminder. And in case you don't have the strength or courage to do that yourself, let me be the one to remind you:

Called to Reign

Sometimes, we think we need to fight giants, lions, or armies to be a conqueror or to reign. We think God needs us to fight some huge battle to be used by Him. When maybe, you just need to reign over your dishes, laundry, tasks for the day, or like me, your taxes. This is what God calls us to, He calls us to overcome, He calls us to reign. He calls us to get off our mats, pick up our bed, and walk. Then He calls us to take authority over what He has placed in front of us.

Career vs. Calling: Understanding the Biblical Distinction

In our pursuit of purpose and fulfillment, we often encounter the terms "career" and "calling." However, it's important to distinguish between the two and recognize how they intersect in our lives as Christian women. This article explores the profound difference between a career and a calling, shedding light on their biblical foundations and implications.

Defining Career and Calling:

A career can be understood as the professional path or occupation we choose to pursue based on our skills, interests, and financial considerations. It encompasses the jobs and positions we hold throughout our lives, providing opportunities for growth, skill development, and financial provision. However, a calling extends beyond the realm of a career. It is a divine invitation from God to fulfill His purpose for our lives. Our calling is rooted in His intentional design and plan for us, going beyond personal achievement and success. It centers around serving God and others, utilizing our unique gifts and talents for His glory. Unlike a career, which may change over time as circumstances and interests evolve, a calling endures throughout different seasons of life, regardless of specific roles or professions. It inspires passion, fulfillment, and a deeper connection with God as we align with His will. In summary, while a career focuses on personal goals and achievements, a calling is a higher purpose that calls us to serve God and make a difference in the world.

Ephesians 2:10: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." This verse highlights the concept of God's intentional design and purpose for each individual.

1 Peter 4:10: "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace." This verse emphasizes the importance of utilizing our gifts to serve others and contribute to the Kingdom of God.

Characteristics of a Career:

A career is characterized by its focus on personal achievement, financial stability, and professional success. It is driven by individual goals, aspirations, and societal expectations. As we pursue a career, we may experience growth, skill development, and financial provision. Our careers provide us with opportunities to excel, contribute to society, and establish a sense of stability and security. However, it's important to recognize that a career alone may not provide lasting fulfillment and purpose, as it often centers around personal ambitions rather than a deeper sense of calling.

Characteristics of a Calling:

In contrast to a career, a calling is rooted in serving God and others. It goes beyond personal desires and ambitions, calling us to utilize our unique gifts and talents to make a positive impact in the world. Our calling is anchored in a sense of purpose and divine assignment, reflecting God's intentional design for our lives. It transcends specific roles or professions and endures throughout different seasons, remaining constant even when our career paths may change. A calling ignites passion, fulfillment, and a deeper connection with God as we align ourselves with His will and seek to advance His Kingdom.

Navigating the Intersection:

Recognizing the intersection between our career and calling is essential. While a career can be a platform to fulfill our calling, it requires intentional alignment with God's purpose and values. We should seek God's guidance and discernment in choosing and pursuing our career paths. It is crucial to prioritize character development, integrity, and Kingdom impact in both our careers and callings. By staying open to God's leading and remaining flexible, we allow Him to guide us in adjusting our paths as He directs. Navigating the intersection between our career and calling requires an ongoing commitment to seeking God's will and allowing Him to shape our journey.

In summary, while a career focuses on personal achievement and success, a calling encompasses a higher purpose of serving God and making a positive impact in the world. Understanding the distinct characteristics of each empowers us to navigate the intersection between our career and calling, aligning our lives with God's divine plan and living out our purpose to the fullest.
