I love presents. I love giving presents, and I love receiving them. I even love when Amazon delivers me presents—even if I buy them for myself. Every time an Amazon box arrives, I excitedly announce, “I got a present!” There’s something about the joy of gifts that fills me up, and I think it’s because God, the original gift-giver, often likes to speak to me through these little gift moments. Whether it’s a cute pair of shoes found on sale or a free coffee or meal for no reason, these small blessings always feel like God is sending me a little gift to say, "Hey, I love you and I see you."
He is the original Gift Giver and meets each person in their need. I once read about someone who was having a tough day and prayed, asking God for comfort. As she walked along the beach that day, she saw the shore lined with starfish—her very favorite. She felt this was God speaking directly to her heart, and her spirit was lifted. After reading that, I prayed, "God, I want that!" I’ve never been afraid to be a little childlike in my prayers. Not long after, God began using hummingbirds to minister to me. I would be walking, and a hummingbird would stop directly in my path, as if staring at me. People would randomly give me cards and pictures with hummingbirds on them. And even after I moved to Florida, where there are no hummingbirds (at least, that I’ve seen), I still randomly come across a picture of a hummingbird just when I need a reminder that God is with me.
Some people call these things God winks or God kisses. I just like to call it God giving me presents.
What kind of little reminder of God's love do you need today? Don't be afraid to ask. God delights in giving us good gifts, no matter how small. As James 1:17 says, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." Take a moment to pray and open your heart to receive the little signs of His love that He’s waiting to show you. You might be surprised by the ways He chooses to say, "I love you."
